About the Film

In The Dyslexic Advantage, leading scientists, educators, and innovators invite viewers to see dyslexia in a new light. The film explores the creative and powerful ways dyslexic minds think, problem-solve, and shape the world.

From ocean explorer Dr. Robert Ballard, who discovered the Titanic, to architects, designers, engineers, and artists, the film reveals how dyslexia’s distinct wiring can fuel discovery, storytelling, and innovation.

Ballard describes reading The Dyslexic Advantage as a life-changing moment — “it explained me to me.” The film carries that same insight to families, educators, and students everywhere: dyslexia is not a defect to overcome, but a different way of processing the world — one that our culture deeply needs.

Combining animation, interviews, and breathtaking visuals, the film traces how challenges in early schooling often obscure hidden talents. It shows how understanding dyslexic strengths can transform classrooms, careers, and lives.

A Vision for Change

For generations, dyslexia has been defined only by what’s difficult — decoding, spelling, reading speed. The Dyslexic Advantage challenges that narrow view.

Grounded in neuroscience and years of work with students and adults, the film highlights four key reasoning strengths — Material, Interconnected, Narrative, and Dynamic — known as the MIND strengths. These strengths often drive success in science, art, design, and entrepreneurship.

By focusing on these capacities, The Dyslexic Advantage aims to change how parents, teachers, and society at large understand learning differences — turning awareness into appreciation, and empathy into empowerment.

About the Filmmakers

Doctors Fernette and Brock Eide, founders of the nonprofit Dyslexic Advantage, are physicians and researchers who have spent more than two decades studying dyslexia and helping families and organizations recognize its strengths.

They’ve been consultants to the U.S. President’s Council on Bioethics, guest lecturers at Stanford University and Hunter College, and speakers at global conferences on learning, neurodiversity, and innovation. Their work has appeared in The New York Times, Scientific American Mind, Wired, The Times (London), and many other outlets.

The Eides have also advised corporations such as Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, BBC, and GCHQ on cognitive diversity and the strengths of dyslexic thinkers in innovation and problem-solving.

The Community Behind the Film

The film grows out of the larger Dyslexic Advantage community, which brings together parents, students, educators, and professionals through conferences, mentorship programs, and publications.

The organization publishes a free monthly newsletter and a premium magazine devoted to strength-based research and stories. It also sponsors the Karina Eide Young Writers Awards, which celebrate creative writing by dyslexic students worldwide.

All proceeds from the film support Dyslexic Advantage’s nonprofit mission to promote positive identity, community, and achievement among dyslexic individuals of all ages.
